Disasters you can watch: floods, fires and locusts in a city builder

Disasters have been part of Glyph Dynasty since its first day. On 23 October 2026 they became something you can watch: the river now rises as a wave and leaves silt behind, fire runs across the roofs with sparks and smoke, and a swarm of locusts settles on the fields and eats them.

What can go wrong

Five disasters come with a warning: flood, drought, plague, locusts and earthquake. Two more wait for neglected streets: fire and the collapse of old buildings. Each has its own defence, and each is tied to one of the three ancestors the city honours, so forgetting the River Mother is a bad idea in a river valley.

  • Flood: the river rises over the floodplain. Dykes hold it back; after the water goes, the silt makes the fields richer for a year
  • Drought: the harvest withers. Water wheels keep fields alive
  • Plague: healers and acupuncturists stop it and make it pass faster
  • Locusts: a swarm crosses the map and strips the fields under it
  • Fire and collapse: inspectors shore up old buildings and put out fires; burnt buildings leave ruins to clear

The flood, as a wave

Before a flood the river turns muddy at its banks and ripples harder as the day approaches. When it comes, the water does not appear all at once: it spreads from the riverbed tile by tile, with a foaming edge, until it covers the whole floodplain. When it drains it leaves silt on the fields, the same fertile mud that the simulation rewards with a better harvest.

Fire on the roofs

Fire runs from roof to roof, throws sparks downwind and raises a column of smoke over the quarter. It spreads exactly as the simulation spreads it, from building to neighbour, so what you see is what is happening.

The locust swarm

A locust swarm is a dense, swirling cloud of dark yellow and brown characters. It enters from the edge of the map, settles on the fields in its path, eats them down to stubble and leaves over the far edge. The band it crosses is the one the simulation is actually eating, so the cloud tells you which harvest is lost.

Only a view, never a different game

All of this is drawn on top of the simulation and never changes it. The same game with the effects on and off gives the same city, bit for bit; tests check it. If the movement is too much, the Disaster effects setting turns it off, and the old markers return so nothing is hidden. The same rule holds for weather and the Spring Festival.

A long tradition

Floods and fires are as old as the genre: the Nile flood is the heartbeat of Pharaoh, and fire and collapse kept Caesar III players busy with prefects and engineers. We wrote about that lineage in games like Pharaoh and Caesar III. In China the oldest of these stories is the flood itself: tradition credits Yu the Great with taming it and founding the Xia, which is where our campaign begins.
